Aspen is a short drive from the airport — and one of the most constrained general-aviation fields in the United States. Aspen/Pitkin County Airport (ASE / KASE), Sardy Field, sits at about 7,838 ft in a mountain valley with a single runway, a published 95 ft wingspan limit, and a hard airport closure from 23:00 to 07:00 local. Density altitude, steep approaches and winter demand do the rest. None of that makes Aspen impractical. It means the trip is planned around the field: the right aircraft for the day, a daylight arrival with buffer, and a clear alternate at Eagle County (EGE) or Rifle (RIL) when ASE is weather- or performance-limited. This is how we plan an Aspen charter on the desk.
The short answer
For the charter product page that sits beside this planning guide, see Private Jet Charter Aspen.
- Airport: Aspen/Pitkin County / Sardy Field (ASE / KASE), about 3 miles northwest of Aspen.
- Runway: 15/33, 8,006 ft × 100 ft, grooved asphalt. Declared landing distance available is 7,006 ft on both ends (Runway 33 has a 1,000 ft displaced threshold). Take-off run available is 7,006 ft on Runway 15 and 8,006 ft on Runway 33.
- Elevation: 7,837.9 ft MSL. Density altitude rises quickly on a warm day; the operator runs the performance numbers for the actual temperature and weight.
- Wingspan: maximum 95 ft tip-to-tip (Pitkin County Title 10 and the FAA airport remarks). Types wider than that — including the Global 7500 (104 ft) and Gulfstream G650 (99 ft 7 in) — use Eagle or another longer field.
- Hours / curfew: airport closed 23:00–07:00 local. Tower typically 07:00–20:00; the field is uncontrolled from 20:00 to 23:00. Stage III jets may not arrive between 23:00 and 07:00 or depart between 22:30 and 07:00.
- Landing weight (airport ordinance): max gross landing weight 100,000 lb dual-wheel / 160,000 lb dual-tandem, with director exceptions only against evidence the actual weight is below the limit.
- Customs: ASE is not a landing-rights airport and not an airport of entry. Domestic US arrivals need no customs. International arrivals clear elsewhere first.
- Alternates: Eagle County (EGE) — 9,000 × 150 ft at 6,547 ft — and Rifle Garfield County (RIL) — 7,000 × 100 ft at 5,537 ft — when ASE is restricted, full, or weather-bound.
- Flight time: Denver about 30–40 minutes. Los Angeles / Dallas about 2 hours. Houston about 2½ hours. New York about 3½–4 hours. (Estimates — see table below.)

Aspen/Pitkin County (ASE)
What the FAA and Pitkin County publish about Sardy Field:
- One runway, 15/33: 8,006 × 100 ft, asphalt/grooved, medium-intensity edge lights. Weight-bearing figures in the FAA record include single-wheel 80,000 lb, double-wheel 100,000 lb and double-tandem 160,000 lb.
- Declared distances. Runway 15: TORA/TODA/ASDA/LDA all 7,006 ft. Runway 33: TORA/TODA/ASDA 8,006 ft, LDA 7,006 ft (1,000 ft displaced threshold). Landing length available either way is 7,006 ft.
- Approaches. Published instrument procedures include LOC/DME-E, RNAV (GPS)-F and the Roaring Fork Visual to Runway 15. Terrain around the valley forces high rates of descent and non-standard traffic patterns; the Chart Supplement discourages operations in reduced visibility for pilots unfamiliar with the area.
- 95 ft wingspan. The airport is restricted to a maximum aircraft wingspan of 95 ft until a future runway that meets Group III safety requirements opens. That is a hard geometric limit, not a soft “prefer midsize” note.
- PPR and staging. Prior permission is required for take-off on Runway 15 (contact the FBO). The FBO requires 2 hours’ advance notice to stage an aircraft before departure.
- Noise abatement procedures are in effect; contact airport operations. Stage I aircraft are prohibited; Stage II may not fly nighttime operations; Stage III follows the arrival/departure windows above.
- Cold-temperature airport. Altitude correction is required at or below –21 °C.
Which jets fit. Light, midsize, super-midsize and many large-cabin jets operate ASE when the specific airframe clears wingspan, landing weight and the day’s performance calculation. Hot-and-high summer afternoons and heavy fuel loads for a long outbound often force a payload trade or a departure from EGE/RIL instead. We check the individual tail before we quote.
FBOs on the field. Atlantic Aviation Aspen and Signature Flight Support ASE handle fuel, parking and passenger service. Winter weekends fill the ramp; we confirm parking when we book.
Eagle (EGE) and Rifle (RIL)
When ASE is closed by weather, saturated, or the chosen aircraft cannot meet ASE’s limits, we plan an alternate up front.
| Airport | Runway (FAA) | Elevation | Role |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aspen/Pitkin (ASE / KASE) | 15/33: 8,006 × 100 ft (LDA 7,006 ft) | 7,838 ft | Default for Aspen and Snowmass |
| Eagle County Regional (EGE / KEGE) | 07/25: 9,000 × 150 ft (LDA Rwy 25: 8,000 ft) | 6,547 ft | Primary alternate and the usual field for wingspan-restricted ultra-long-range types; also serves Vail / Beaver Creek |
| Rifle Garfield County (RIL / KRIL) | 08/26: 7,000 × 100 ft | 5,537 ft | Lower-elevation Western Slope option when ASE and EGE are constrained |
EGE is about 25 nm north of ASE by air. The Chart Supplement lists it as a U.S. Customs user-fee airport (office hours published; three hours’ advance notice). RIL is about 44 nm west by air and is not a landing-rights or airport-of-entry field. Road time from either alternate into Aspen depends on weather and traffic; we arrange the car with the handling request so it meets the aircraft.
Customs: domestic US, clear elsewhere for international
ASE is not on CBP’s general-aviation ports of entry. A flight that starts in the United States arrives domestically — no customs. A flight from Europe, Canada, Mexico or the Caribbean clears U.S. Customs at a port of entry first (for example Denver, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles-area fields that accept GA international arrivals, or EGE by prior arrangement as a user-fee airport), then continues to Aspen as a domestic leg. Every private international arrival still needs an eAPIS manifest filed before departure; the operator files it once we have passport details.
Which aircraft to choose
- From Denver (~100 nm): a turboprop such as the Pilatus PC-12 or King Air 350, or a light jet. Short sector; ski-bag volume often decides the cabin.
- From Las Vegas (~436 nm) or Los Angeles / Van Nuys (~630–640 nm): light or midsize jets such as the Phenom 300 or Citation XLS+. Midsize is the comfortable choice with a family and ski bags.
- From Dallas (~620 nm) or Houston (~800–810 nm): midsize or super-midsize. A Challenger 350 is a frequent fit for ASE’s wingspan and hot-and-high performance.
- From Chicago (~880 nm): midsize or super-midsize nonstop.
- From New York / Teterboro (~1,500 nm) or Boston (~1,630 nm): super-midsize nonstop in most conditions; large-cabin types that stay inside 95 ft wingspan also operate when performance allows. Ultra-long-range types over the wingspan limit use EGE.
- From Europe: a heavy or ultra-long-range jet into a U.S. port of entry, then a domestic sector to ASE or EGE. ASE itself has no customs.

Flight times
Approximate great-circle distances to ASE. Times are estimates for a light or midsize jet in normal winds — label them as planning figures, not guaranteed block times. Winter westbound headwinds and mountain routing change the number; the operator confirms it in the quote.
| From | Distance (approx.) | Typical time airborne |
|---|---|---|
| Denver (DEN / APA) | ~100 nm | about 30–40 min |
| Las Vegas (LAS) | ~436 nm | about 1 h 15 min – 1 h 30 min |
| Dallas Love Field (DAL) | ~620 nm | about 1 h 45 min – 2 h |
| Van Nuys / Los Angeles (VNY / LAX) | ~630–640 nm | about 1 h 50 min – 2 h 10 min |
| San Francisco (SFO) | ~735 nm | about 2 h – 2 h 15 min |
| Houston (HOU / IAH) | ~800–810 nm | about 2 h 15 min – 2 h 40 min |
| Chicago (ORD / MDW) | ~880 nm | about 2 h 30 min – 2 h 50 min |
| Teterboro / Westchester (TEB / HPN) | ~1,500–1,520 nm | about 3 h 30 min – 4 h |
| Boston (BOS) | ~1,630 nm | about 3 h 45 min – 4 h 15 min |
| Palm Beach (PBI) | ~1,540 nm | about 3 h 45 min – 4 h 15 min |
Cost depends on aircraft class, whether the aircraft waits in Aspen or repositions, and peak ski weeks (Christmas–New Year and Presidents’ Week are the tightest). Hourly ranges by category are on our private jet charter cost per hour page. U.S. charter flights also carry the 7.5% federal excise tax, shown as a separate line. Empty legs on the Denver, Dallas, Los Angeles and New York corridors appear from time to time in season — set an empty leg alert if dates are flexible.

Winter demand, parking and the 2027 runway works
Ski season (roughly late November through mid-April) and summer mountain weeks fill ASE’s ramp and the limited hotel inventory in town. Christmas week outbound peaks and the Sunday after New Year are especially tight; we book parking and the preferred arrival window when we hold the aircraft, not the day before.
Pitkin County has published a runway-reconstruction closure window of 4 April 2027 at 23:00 through 19 November 2027 at 19:00 local (airport FAQ). Trips inside that window should be planned to EGE or RIL from the start; check the airport’s latest notice before committing.
Weather and mountain flying
ASE sits in a high mountain valley with terrain from about 12,500 to 14,000 ft nearby. The FAA remarks note that adverse weather is magnified in the mountains, that IFR alternates are often needed even when the forecast looks better than 2,000 ft and 3 miles, and that mountain flying is not recommended unless ceilings are at least 2,000 ft above the highest terrain with 15 miles visibility. On a day that goes below minimums, the crew holds, delays or diverts to EGE/RIL. We build that alternate into the quote on borderline days rather than adding it later.
Combining Aspen with other Rocky Mountain trips
Aspen pairs naturally with other Colorado and Wyoming ski fields. Telluride is about 90 nm southwest; Jackson Hole is about 316 nm northwest. A common pattern is a week split between Aspen and another mountain town, or a Denver arrival followed by a short hop into ASE. See also our Aspen destination guide. We price multi-leg itineraries in one request.
How we book it
Tell us the dates, passenger count, ski/golf bags, where you are staying (Aspen, Snowmass, or a Vail-side address that might favour EGE), and whether a late arrival is acceptable. We check wingspan and landing weight for the proposed tails, the day’s performance at 7,838 ft, FBO parking, the 23:00 closure and Stage III windows, and customs if you are coming from abroad. Then we return all-inclusive quotes from vetted operators. The operator keeps full operational control of the aircraft. You get one contact through to landing.
Frequently asked questions
- Which airport do private jets use for Aspen?
- Aspen/Pitkin County Airport / Sardy Field (ASE), 3 miles northwest of town. Its single runway, 15/33, is 8,006 ft long and 100 ft wide, with 7,006 ft of landing distance available either way.
- Can a large private jet land in Aspen?
- Many large-cabin jets can, if the individual aircraft stays within the 95 ft wingspan limit, the published landing-weight limits, and the operator’s performance calculation for the day. Ultra-long-range types wider than 95 ft (for example the Global 7500 and G650) use Eagle County (EGE) instead.
- Is there a night curfew at Aspen?
- The airport is closed 23:00–07:00 local. Stage III aircraft may not arrive in that window and may not depart between 22:30 and 07:00. The control tower is typically open 07:00–20:00; from 20:00 to 23:00 the field is uncontrolled.
- Is there customs at Aspen airport?
- No. ASE is not a landing-rights airport and not an airport of entry. International flights clear U.S. Customs first, then continue to Aspen domestically. Eagle County can handle some GA international arrivals as a user-fee airport with prior notice.
- When should I use Eagle or Rifle instead of ASE?
- When the chosen aircraft exceeds ASE’s wingspan or weight limits, when winter weather or traffic closes or saturates ASE, during the published 2027 runway-reconstruction window, or when your lodging is closer to Vail / Beaver Creek (EGE) than to Aspen.
- How long is the flight from New York to Aspen by private jet?
- About 1,500 nm from Teterboro, typically around 3½ to 4 hours in a super-midsize jet in normal winds.
- How long is the flight from Denver to Aspen?
- About 100 nm, roughly 30 to 40 minutes airborne. A turboprop is often the most efficient choice for a small group with ski bags.
- How long is the flight from Los Angeles to Aspen?
- About 630–640 nm from Van Nuys or Los Angeles, typically around 2 hours in a light or midsize jet.
